Construction of the combined coke plant and co-generation facility entails an investment of more than $800 million in the State of Ohio.

Purpose of the Project

FDS believes that maintaining domestic steel manufacturing and energy independence are critical strategic issues for future security of the US.

Coke is key ingredient for the production of new steel from iron ore. Currently, there is a 4 million ton shortfall in domestic coke production. In addition, more than 50% of existing coke production is from byproduct plants greater than 30 years old. The FDS Coke Plant will provide a reliable and affordable domestic supply of coke to Ohio and other US steel manufacturing plants for decades into the future.

Sources of dependable, affordable, and sustainable electricity are required for a stable US and State of Ohio economy. Electricity generated by the FDS Co-Generation Facility will be enough to supply power to approximately 100,000 homes with no additional air pollutant emissions.

Project Site

The proposed project site for the FDS Coke Plant and 135 MW Co-Generation Facility is an existing vacant underutilized industrial property located on the northeast side of the City of Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. This central Midwest location is within 225 miles of an estimated 75% of the North American coke market.

The project site is adjacent to an existing CSX rail terminal and the Toledo-Lucas Country Port Authority docks. In addition, major US Interstate highways are within 1 to 2 miles of the site. These features provide the FDS Project with excellent rail, water, and highway transportation options.

An existing Toledo Edison high voltage electrical substation is located less than 1,500 feet from FDS Co-Generation Facility. Regional high voltage transmission lines are also located adjacent to this substation for interconnection to the electrical grid.
