The FDS Project incorporates the principles of “Natural Capitalism” by using a world class integrated design and new innovative process technologies to minimize environmental impacts including air pollutant emissions. This approach leverages project business objectives to meet common goals of improving the environment.

Water

Water for the FDS Project will be supplied by the City of Toledo. Therefore, water will not be withdrawn from the Lake Erie watershed for the coke production or electrical generation operations.

Process Wastewater

The FDS Project is expected to recycle up to 90% of its wastewater generated onsite. No wastewater will be discharged into the Maumee River or Lake Erie. The City of Toledo will be providing process and sanitary wastewater discharge services to the project site.

Wastewater generated by the FDS Coke Plant primarily consists of quench water used to cool the coke and steam blowdown from the heat recovery steam generating units. Wastewater generated by the FDS Co-Generation Facility primarily consists of cooling tower blow down and smaller amounts from various plant sumps. All non-sanitary wastewaters generated at the FDS Co-Generation Facility will be directed to the quench pond at the FDS Coke Plant for use in the coke quenching process.

The reuse strategy will make the FDS Project a zero discharge site with respect to process and non-contact cooling wastewater.

Storm Water

The FDS Coke Plant project site has been designed to include onsite retention ponds to eliminate the offsite discharge of storm water generated during rain events. The storm water will be routed to the quench pond for use in the quenching process.

Noise

The FDS Project will be located such that the nearest residential area is approximately 1 mile southwest of the Project site. The site is located in a heavily industrial area and is not anticipated to generate noise in excess of the existing background levels.

Odors

Hydrogen sulfide and other odor causing chemical components which are traditionally associated with older byproduct coking plants are inherently less prevalent in the non-recovery coking process. Further, the FDS Project will be located in a highly industrialized area, with the nearest residential areas located approximately one mile to the southwest.
